Computer center: Creation

The Computer center was established in 1983, with duties limited at the beginning to administrative works and some computational programming.
The tasks of the center were enhanced in 1986 with the provision of modern equipment that facilitated technical work, automatic drawing, and the digitizing and update of maps.

Remote Sensing Center: Creation

The remote sensing center was established lately, and was affiliated to the computer center.
Remote sensing is a new technology for the remote study and understanding of features using sensors. Whether general or detailed, the studies are conducted using specialized equipment carried on aircrafts or satellites.

Map production phases

Ground features display a special behavior when subjected to electromagnetic radiation.

Such a behavior is called the spectral signature of the object that enables us to recognize it from its digital data. The satellite image is usually composed of pixels, each carrying a specific digital value expressing the nature and specifications of the target, as for its size, it is related to the spatial resolution of the sensor, and the satellite orbit.

The spatial resolution varies between few meters to less than a meter, and maybe soon centimeters. Satellites images are easy to manipulate and display, and thus their importance.

Completed projects

- 1:20,000 digital maps (general, touristic, and administrative).
- 1:5,000 digital touristic map of Beirut.
- Digital Rivers and springs.
- Digital Archeological sites.
- Pro GIS of Municipal Beirut 1:5,000.
- Pro GIS for some cities and villages in Lebanon.
- Develop maps for 45 cities and villages for the central census administration.

Current and future projects

- Update of geological maps.
- Develop maps at a scale of 1:5,000 for cities and villages (map of Beirut is completed and printed, and D.A.G is in the process of completing the maps of the cities of Tripoli, Jounieh, and Byblos).
- Use the satellite images to produce soils and agricultural maps and changes studies in coordination with the national center for scientific research.
- Digital Elevation Contour Line Project.
- Digital Terrain Model.
