The Armed Forces Commander General Joseph Aoun visited this morning the military units deployed in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, that execute the missions of preserving security during the popular movements in all Lebanese regions.
The tour included the 1st Armed vehicles regiment in Sarba and the 11th brigade in Naqash as well as the Rangers headquarters in Roumieh, the 3rd Intervention Regiment in Ras Beirut, the Airborne Regiment at the Presidential Palace highway and the anti-armor regiment in Fiyadiye.
General Aoun commended the efforts exerted by the soldiers and praised the work that they were doing, saying they showed a lot of awareness in their approach to the recent events. This, he added, prevented any attempts to take advantage of the situation.
General Aoun addressed the soldiers, telling them that they were committed to a level of discipline, professionalism and boldness and saluted the families of soldiers, providing support to their children in this stage.
He also said: “you have committed to your oath. You have proved that the military institution is the institution that brings all the country’s citizens together, no matter what their direction or point of view is.”
Moreover, General Aoun stated that the LAF is currently performing the mission of preserving security inside the country for the sake of its people and said that the freedom of movement is enshrined in international treaties.
General Aoun addressed the recent arrests, saying that they included those that rioted, confronted the Army and prevented it from carrying out its mission, in addition to others who were caught in the possession of narcotics.
He also addressed the death of Alaa Abou Fakher last week, saying that the case is with the judiciary authorities and stated that this incident was the first in a month of popular movements and that the situation is different than in different countries that are witnessing similar events in which there are a large number of victims, and this is what we are trying to avoid.
Furthermore, General Aoun called on people to avoid rumors that aim at misdirecting public opinion and that cause a division between citizens and the military. “History will witness that the Army saved Lebanon,” he said.
