Prime Minister Hassan Diab, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Zeina Akar and LAF Commander General Joseph Aoun visited the eastern and north eastern border area and toured LAF units stationed in the region as well as the 2nd Land Border Regiment in Ras Baalbek where they were briefed concerning the actions taken in the area to halt smuggling operations and the challenges that the LAF is facing in this regard, particularly in light of the scarce and modest resources as well as the fact that the large border and overlapping areas between Lebanon and Syria make this task even more difficult.

Following the tour, General Aoun visited the 3rd Brigade HQ in West Bekaa and the 7th Intervention Regiment HQ in Riyaq. General Aoun inspected the security measures and gave his directions and orders to the troops. In a brief speech, General Aoun also “stressed that despite the current economic situation the country is going through and its overwhelming impact over the Lebanese society, civil peace remains the LAF’s priority and the Army will continue protecting the country and the people. “We won’t allow any party to destabilize the country and tamper with security, and despite the aggravating difficulties and dangers, the LAF will manage to overcome the obstacles armed with the traits of awareness, discipline and the cooperation of all parties” General Aoun added. He noted that “the LAF’s primary concern is security and for that it is working with a firm will and an unwavering determination. Rumors and defamation will not deter the LAF from performing its tasks and in assisting the Lebanese people so that the country may remain safe”.

General Aoun commended the professionalism of the troops who are performing all the tasks and missions they were assigned to conduct in spite of the difficult and complicated situation in the country.
